Spanish prepositions are used in some similar ways and some different ways with English. For example, in English, we say “thanks for…” and in Spanish, it’s “gracias por…” following the same general structure. However, some are different. For example, in English, we say “I’m thinking about you” and in Spanish, it’s “Pienso en ti.” (I’m thinking in you).
Be careful translating directly from English to Spanish with prepositions because they are often different than what they are in English. Take the time to talk to native speakers and understand when to use what prepositions and what phrases are common that include prepositions.
A: Donde están mis lentes?
B: Están encima de la mesa.
A: Cuál mesa?
B: La mesa entre la oficina y tu cuarto.
A: Bueno gracias. Después de encontrar mis lentes, vamos al banco.
B: Dónde está el banco?
A: Está enfrente de la escuela, al lado del parque.
B: Está lejos de aquí!
A: Si! Entonces voy a apurarme!
