Spanish prepositions are used in some similar ways and some different ways with English. For example, in English, we say “thanks for…” and in Spanish, it’s “gracias por…” following the same general structure. However, some are different. For example, in English, we say “I’m thinking about you” and in Spanish, it’s “Pienso en ti.” (I’m thinking in you).

  • Gracias por el regalo. (Thanks for the gift.)
  • Mi casa está lejos de tu casa. (My house is far from your house.)
  • El gato está fuera de la casa. (The cat is outside the house.)
  • Soy de los Estados Unidos. (I’m from the United States.)
  • Ella está al lado de la mácina. (She is next to the machine.)
  • Quiero helado de chocolate en vez de vanilla. (I want chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.)
  • El libro está encima del escritorio. (The book is on the desk.)
  • Hasta el año 2020, ella no va graduarse. (Until the year 2020, she is not going to graduate.)
  • La casa está entre de dos bibliotecas. (The house is between two libraries.)
  • Te hablo después de la película. (I’ll call you after the movie.)
  • La pelota está adentro de la caja. (The ball is inside the box.)
  • Te he amado desde la primera vez que te ví. (I’ve loved you since the first time I saw you.)
  • Este regalo es para ti. (This gift is for you.)
  • Gracias por todo. (Thanks for everything.)

Be careful translating directly from English to Spanish with prepositions because they are often different than what they are in English. Take the time to talk to native speakers and understand when to use what prepositions and what phrases are common that include prepositions.
