Norwegian Prepositions

Norwegian Prepositions

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. A preposition usually indicates the temporal, spatial or logical relationship of its object to the rest of the sentence as in the example in the table below. Prepositions usually come before the noun and its article (like in English).

Norwegian Prepositions

The keyboard is on the desk

Tastaturet er pulten

The carpet is under the table

Teppet er under bordet

The tree is in front of the building

Treet står framfor bygningen

The child is hiding behind his mother

Barnet gøymer seg bak mor si

The most common prepositions are: after (etter), before (før), between (mellom), under (under), on (på or oppå), in (i), outside (utanfor), behind (bak)... (for a longer list, see the table below).

Almost all languages have their own take on some prepositions, which make them difficult to learn for foreigners. In Norway, the prepositions (on) and i (in) sometimes confuse. In English, you would use in to describe living somewhere, as in I live in Oslo, I live in Gjøvik. In Norwegian, these sentences are Eg bur i Oslo, eg bur Gjøvik. The logic behind this is that bigger or coastal cities demand i, while several inland cities, as well as islands, use .
